A Life in the Slow Lane

Rambling in Croatia

We had promised ourselves that if it was raining when we woke up, we would break camp. The morning saw blue skies so we have stayed at the excellent, if large, Camping Krk.

Today we took the dogs on a ramble on a 7km footpath which runs around an uninhabited peninsula adjacent to the campsite. The path was well marked with red, white and red horizontal stripes which we have come across before in Europe.

The trail was mostly through woodland but we managed a detour at one point down to an isolated little cove. The crystal clear Adriatic water enabled us to spend some time watching small scale sea life near to shore. There were virtually no other people on the walk so Mable got a good run off the lead.

We were baffled throughout our route by the enormous number rocks which had been stacked into both apparent walls but also meaningless piles. The walls seem to serve no purpose, often forming enclosures far too small and bare to be of any use for farming, but mostly they were piled into big heaps. We gave the puzzle much thought and reached no realistic conclusion.

The afternoon was spent lazing in the sun, the dogs, having had a good walk, happily joined us.

A final word on Camping Krk. This really is a campsite of the highest quality. It may be too big for some, but other than that the facilities are undoubtedly the best we have ever come across and we would not hesitate to recommend it to others – out of season.
