A Life in the Slow Lane

Costa Blanca

After a slightly later start than for the last three days, we headed 200 miles south to the campsite on which we expect to stay for the next three or four nights. We would have loved to look round Valencia en route, but there are no suitable places to stop in a motorhome, which is often the case for the biggest cities.

Our campsite, Camping Santa Marta (39.177886, -0.243812) (€16 on ACSI with free wifi, which is very slow), is situated about a mile or so from the town of Cullera, on what we think is the northerly end of the Costa Blanca. The whole area is blighted by large blocks of high rise holiday flats, but at this time of year it is very quiet and the campsite is nice enough.

High rise flats. The blight of much of the Spanish Costas.

Our pitch on the campsite is opposite two sets of Brits, although we were confused because one couple are driving a French registered motorhome. It turns out they have lived in Normandy for the last ten years. The other couple are at the beginning of a two year trip in their motorhome. Both sets are very chatty, which is nice because for the first time this trip we have been able to sit out, with the air temperature reaching 18 degrees.

Basil’s in the shade in the late afternoon. I hope that means sun in the morning.

Sarah, the dogs and I have been for a walk on the beach and promenade. The storm that I have mentioned a couple of times, has made a big mess of the beach, although they have begun to clear it up. Our neighbours showed us a photo from two days ago where the beach was covered in hundreds of dead fish and there were still a few to interest the dogs today.

Beach Walk.

Having left the beach for the promenade we found a sign saying dogs were not allowed on the sand. We saw other people walking their dogs on the beach and so I suspect it is a rule that is flexibly applied in the winter.

Our neighbours have also told us that there are some great lunch deals to be had in the main town and so we will probably check that in due course. In the meantime my main aim is to get some planning done.
