A Life in the Slow Lane

Dramatic Dolomites

We set off from Belluno this morning with clear blue skies. Things looked promising for our trip through the Dolomites.

Apart from one small mishap, where we tried to go over a pass that was limited to 3.5t and had to find somewhere to turn Basil round, our trip was smooth and spectacular. Basil hauled himself and his huge carcass over several 2000 metre passes, with barely a grumble. He handled the numerous hairpins like a Ferrari and he only needed to breath in for coaches and lorries, occasionally.

As for Sarah and I the whole journey through the Dolomites and then part of the Alps to our latest campsite near Innsbruck, was spectacular. The Dolomites are very jagged mountains compared to others we have seen in Europe. Snow flecked pinnacles soar above the tree covered lower slopes and every now and again there is a stunning turquoise lake nestled in a valley. It was a tiring drive but, in today’s glorious weather, a worthwhile one.

Tonight we are at Camping Natterer See (47.235959 11.339503). A very upmarket Austrian site on a small lake. It is very well situated with some pitches having Alpine views. It 19 Euros with ACSI and there is a bus from outside the site into Innsbruck. Dogs are allowed on board with a muzzle and dogs are also welcome in the campsite Pizzeria and restaurant. One negative point is the 15 Euros they want for 24 hours wifi!! Luckily we equipped with a Three Mifi device so we don’t need it.
